WHY CGS?

Approaching our centenary in 2029, Canberra Grammar School stands as one of Australia’s leading independent co-educational schools, uniting nearly 100 years of tradition with a bold vision for the future.

As an Anglican day and boarding school for students from Pre-School to Year 12, we believe that a co-educational environment best prepares young people for the world beyond school where collaboration, equality, and respect are fundamental to success.

Our inclusive and globally minded community brings together students from more than 40 nations to learn, live and grow with purpose. Set on a magnificent campus in Canberra’s inner south, CGS offers exceptional academic, co-curricular and pastoral opportunities that inspire curiosity, creativity, confidence and compassion in every student preparing them to thrive as citizens of the world.

OUR SENIOR SCHOOL

We encourage students to develop critical-thinking skills, confidence in leadership, and the ability to find creative solutions in an increasingly complex world—while remaining active and compassionate citizens. Located on our Red Hill campus, the Senior School features outstanding facilities that support academic, co-curricular, and pastoral programmes.

The Secondary Schools Global Challenge is an exciting initiative in its fourth year, developed in collaboration with the Australian National Universitys (ANU) Coral Bell School of Asia Pacific Affairs. The simulation engages students from the Canberra region in pressing global issues, acting as state and non-state actors in evolving negotiations throughout the day.

The SSGC serves as a fantastic opportunity for students, aiding in the development of their negotiation and diplomacy skills. Each participating school represents a global actor connected to the Asia Pacific with the aim of negotiating a Pacific Statement on the Global Climate Crisis.

A big congratulations to our CGS team, who represented the United States of America and placed first in todays challenge. We also extend our appreciation and congratulations to all the other participating schools, your dedication, insight, and collaboration made the day a remarkable and inspiring experience for everyone involved.Image attachmentImage attachment+3Image attachment

Recess for Resilience is back for another year, and our first session last week was full of sunshine, smiles, and positive energy.

This initiative has become a valued part of our School week, offering students and staff a dedicated moment to step outside, move, and reconnect. Whether it’s a gentle walk, a chat with friends, or simply taking a quiet breath in the fresh air, these sessions create space for wellbeing in the middle of a busy school day.

Inspired by Running for Resilience (R4R), founded by former CGS student Matt Breen (CGS 2009), our School was proud to be the first to introduce this programme early last year. Since then, Recess for Resilience has continued to strengthen connection, resilience, and healthy habits across our School community.Image attachmentImage attachment+2Image attachment

As we welcome the start of a new year, our community comes alive with the colour, warmth and spirit of Lunar New Year, a celebration cherished by many and embraced by all as a moment to come together.

This year, we welcome the Year of the Fire Horse, a symbol of passion, enthusiasm and bold forward momentum, inspiring us as we embark on another year of learning, growth and shared experiences. It is also an exciting moment for our community as we extend Chinese language learning throughout the Primary School, complementing the wide range of languages offered in the Senior School.

Together, we honour culture, connection and the richness of the diverse backgrounds that strengthen our School.

We wish everyone a joyful and prosperous Lunar New Year.

Year 12 students David, Atticus, Charlie and Alistair attended a panel discussion at The Australian National University on accountability in the war in Ukraine, hosted by the ANU Centre for European Studies with support from the Embassy of Ukraine and the United Nations.

The students engaged thoughtfully in the discussion, asking insightful questions and representing CGS with maturity and intellectual curiosity. Following the event, the ANU Centre extended an invitation to explore opportunities for future collaboration and to further cultivate student interest in international law, international relations and global politics.

We couldnt be prouder to see our students independently seeking out high-calibre academic forums and embracing opportunities to broaden their global perspectives.
