Years 11-12

Canberra Grammar School is unique in the ACT in offering the Higher School Certificate, the highest educational award available in New South Wales schools.

It is an internationally recognised credential that provides a strong foundation for the future, whether a boy wishes to pursue tertiary qualifications, vocational training or employment.

Each student's result is determined by his performance in the school-based assessment program, where components and weightings are determined by the Board of Studies, and by his performance in the HSC examination at the end of Year 12.

The standards-based Higher School Certificate offers syllabuses that set clear expectations of what the student must learn and measures performance against set standards. The student's mark in each course is reported against descriptive performance bands that show what he knows, understands and can do.

Canberra Grammar School offers more than 30 Board Developed Courses in general education subjects and one Board Endorsed Course in Year 11, General Studies, compulsory for all students.

The Higher School Certificate is governed by the Education Act 1990 (NSW), which sets out the general requirements to be awarded the Higher School Certificate.

Further information is available from the Board of Studies' website http://www.boardofstudies.nsw.edu.au

Canberra Grammar School's results in the HSC confirm it as one of the leading boys' schools in the nation.

University Entrance

A student's performances in the School assessment program and the HSC examinations contribute equally to the Universities Admission Index, calculated by the Technical Committee on Scaling of the NSW Vice-Chancellors Committee. Further information is available from the Universities Admissions Centre websitehttp://www.uac.edu.au

Increasingly universities are using other selection measures in addition to the UAI to select students for university entrance. In some cases, for example, interviews, portfolios, principal's recommendations or special tests are also used to make decisions about course entry.

Where other selection procedures are used students can highlight the level of knowledge and skills they have achieved in their HSC courses to support their case for admission.

CGS has a proud record of success in State and National terms. Around 20% are ranked in the top 5, that is, they gain a Universities Admission Index of 95+ and around 80% of our students go on to tertiary study.

Vision for the Future

Our vision for each young Grammarian is that they are cultured men of character and resolve, able to take their place in the world with confidence.

Among our former scholars we proudly number scientists, ambassadors, agriculturalists, actors, professional athletes, and leaders in the worlds of politics, business, music and defence. Lawyers, doctors, teachers, filmmakers, bureaucrats and academics, they are spread out across Australia and around the world.
