Boys in the junior school student representative council meet regularly over lunch with Mr Tim Guthrie to bring forward ideas raised in class meetings. This week the council discussed the basketball court and ideas about games equipment for use over recess and lunch. Ideas are often brought forward to staff meetings for consideration and further input. The value of the SRC is not necessarily measured in terms of how much it gets done, as making some things happen can be a slow process and of course choosing what should be done involves discussion and negotiation. Rather the value is seen in terms of the action that the boys themselves take to make a difference, whether this be emailing or contacting other staff to pursue lines of enquiry or writing letters outlining well considered and argued proposals or conducting feedback sessions in class meetings.

some people might say that all eyes were drawn south to Flemington on Tuesday 7 November, but our year 6 and early learning centre boys and girls would have had to disagree. Ponies in hand, boys and girls ranging from twelve to three worked their way together around engaging challenges on the Junior School Oval, ranging from our very own Melbourne Cup, falls and all, to parachute games, tunnel crawling, shooting goals and ball games. Boys and girls worked together tremendously, with genuine warmth and enjoyment, reflecting development over the year of strong and authentic cross age relationships. |

In Kindergarten we made an Advent Calendar Christmas Tree. We learned that Advent is the beginning of the church’s year. It lasts from the end of November until the 25th of December. We made our Advent Calendar to count down the last 25 days of school. We painted many green handprints for the tree and designed and decorated our own beautiful baubles. Each day we come together to turn around the next numbered bauble on our calendar and to discover which pair of friends’ photo will be revealed.

Year 6 boys can now be found mediating in the Southside playground at recess and lunchtime breaks. They are easily discernable not just by size, but also by a red ribbon worn draped around the neck, which lets younger boys and girls know that they are there to help. In this arena our year 6 boys put into practice mediation skills explored earlier this year as part and parcel of the Year 6 Personal Development Programme. As and when disputes occur, older boys are right on hand to help younger friends negotiate practical ‘win-win’ resolutions. which brings children back into class with happier faces and wider smiles. |
