Animator goes global

Dave Edwardz ('98) is fast carving out a name for himself in the world of animation.

Writer and director of the short animated film Burley! Dave is hoping his film will make it on the international film festival circuit and launch his career into the big time.

The Australian Film Commission who gave Dave and his colleague a grant to make the film is very impressed and have offered more. The producer is in the process now of submitting it to film festivals around the world.

Burley! is a short film about a young tetra fish, one of a million in her school, who just wants some attention. Feeling lonely and bored, she is attracted by the manic antics of a gang of older fish who spend the hours inventing new extreme sports. She begins a quest to gain their acceptance, but at what cost?

Dave graduated with a Bachelor of Visual Arts in Animation from Brisbane's Griffith University. His first professional job was on the Disney series, The Proud Family, before moving to a games studio where he animated, created cut scenes, and designed creatures. From 2004 to 2006 Dave devoted his time to the production of Burley!

He has since worked as an animator on the Australian series, Animalia, based on Graeme Base's book which goes to air early November on Channel 10.

Dave credits art teacher, Mr Trevor Dunbar, with encouraging and supporting his dreams to become an animator.
