The Cooper Music Scholarship
Established in 2007, this new scholarship will cover the costs of academic tuition
(and full boarding if applicable) at the School for Years 11 and 12 in addition to
instrumental music tuition - at the School or at The Australian National University,
School of Music. The Cooper Scholarship is open to boys currently in Year 10 who are
Australian citizens or permanent residents of Australia. The Cooper Scholarship is the
only known scholarship to provide for boarding, tuition and the costs of instrumental
music tuition in Australia.
Total value is in excess of $60,000 over two years.

The John Barrett Scholarship
The John Barrett Music Scholarships are named in honour of John Barrett, who
was Music Master at Canberra Grammar from 1963 until 1976. Scholarships are
open to all boys currently at the School, including the Junior School. They are
awarded on merit, assessed by audition and administered by the Music Department.
Applications open in March each year. Money for the scholarships comes from an
investment fund administered by the John Barrett Foundation and also from
fund raising activities.

Pre-Requisites
Applicants entering Year 10 will be required to sit the ACER Scholarship Exam to ascertain academic standard. They will also be required to undertake an instrumental or vocal audition, a music theory and aural test, and to attend an interview

Study HSC music at CGS in Years 11 & 12

Scholarship Expectations
Scholarship recipients will also be required to:
sing in at least one of the School Choirs;
play in at least one relevant School orchestra or band and in other ensembles deemed appropriate by the Director of Music;
perform in Recitals each Semester (Senior School only);
play an active part in the promotion of music at CGS;
perform in the John Barrett Concert.
