The first two sports houses were Campbell and Radford. These were renamed in 1939 to Blaxland and Jones and a third added - Sheaffe. The two boarding houses, Blaxland and Jones, compete in inter-House activities under the name of Manaro House. Blaxland House (Boarding House)Established in 1939. Named after Mr. Blaxland, solicitor and a member of the Manaro Grammar School in Cooma, prior to its relocation to Canberra in 1929. Jones House (Boarding House)Established in 1939. Named after Colonel Jones, Commissioner for Police in A.C.T. and one of the foundation members of the School Council. Jones was one of the first three sports houses. Sheaffe HouseEstablished in 1939. Named after Percy Lempriere Sheaffe, a member of the School Council for over thirty years. He surveyed and designed the school oval. Sheaffe was the first dayboy Burgmann HouseEstablished in 1961. Named after Bishop E.H. Burgmann, former Bishop of Canberra – Goulburn and Chairman of the CGS Board of Management. Eddison HouseEstablished in 1961. Named after the three Eddison boys, Jack, Keith and Tom; all of whom attended the school and lost their lives in the Second World War. Garran HouseEstablished in 1965. Named after Sir Robert Garran, Solicitor-General, one of the founders of the Commonwealth and a foundation member of the School Council, and Chancellor of the Diocese of Canberra-Goulburn. Hay HouseEstablished in 1979. Named after Sir David Hay, C.B.E., former Chairman of the Board of Management. Garnsey HouseEstablished in 1982. Named after Bishop D.A. Garnsey, Headmaster of CGS 1948-1958, and thereafter Bishop of Gippsland. Edwards HouseEstablished in 2003. Named after Canon W.J. Edwards, Headmaster of Manaro Grammar School and then of Canberra Grammar School from 1929-1946. Clements House (Year 7 House)Established in 1971. Named after Bishop K.C. Clements, former Bishop of Canberra-Goulburn and former member of the CGS Board of Management. Burgess House (Year 7 House)Established in 1988. Named after Canon Charles Burgess (1866-1958) who, as Rector of Cooma 1906-1913 was instrumental in the establishment of Manaro Grammar School. |
