| Good Man Survey |
|
Over the last eighteen months I have conducted a survey with all boys in the Senior School centred on what they consider to be a "Good Man". The process began with a series of small focus groups examining the question of what is a Good Man, and whether or not this choice of words (i.e. "Good Man", as originally coined by Celia Lashlie) is appropriate. All the groups involved in the early stages agreed that the words "Good Man" caught the essence of the discussion accurately. A "Good Man" is the type of person they aspire to be in the growth process as they cross the bridge from adolescence to manhood. We then set out to try to identify the sorts of qualities a Good Man might have, and a number of small and large groups sought to define what these qualities were. Through wide-ranging discussions and the completion of "Good Man" cards a list of qualities was compiled. The current Year 12 (Class of 2009) was quite busily involved in this, but I also consulted a number of groups across all ages. This list was then put on a template and boys in each of Years 7, 8, 9, 10 and 11 were asked to identify the ten qualities that they thought constituted those of a "Good Man". Further they were asked to consider which five they had identified as the most important, and to list those from first to fifth. The results of the survey have been compiled and a brief paper prepared to outline the next stage. We intend to use the results at the start of the school year in 2010 in a number of different ways. We would also value parental feedback. Please shade the top ten characteristics believed to constitute the qualities that make a "Good Man", and then to rate those qualities from one to five (with one being the most important quality). In the top right hand corner of the questionnaire there is an option to circle either "Parent" or "Employer". If you recruit staff at your place of work, or if you have influence in this area, I would be interested to know what qualities employers are valuing the most in those they recruit. This will be very helpful for our boys seeking employment in the future. Please note that the survey is double-sided for any parent who wishes to give feedback as both a parent and an employer. Please mark the Category: Parent/ Employer section clearly. Questionnaires can be returned to me via email, facsimile or ordinary post by Friday 22nd January 2010. Parent Survey Form [pdf] Many thanks for helping the School develop our understanding of what makes a "Good Man". I hope that you and your family enjoy a refreshing, enlivening and enriching break. Yours sincerely, John Jenkins e
