Canberra Grammar School aims to create fine international citizens by providing the best possible teaching in a happy learning environment for each of our students; now and for generations to come. We appreciate your support as there are always many projects that the School is unable to fund from the income received from fees and government funding.
2013 Fundraising Appeal for the Robert Poate Memorial Scholarship for Leadership
At Canberra Grammar School, we believe in opening the doors of our School to welcome students of outstanding ability and, to facilitate this, we are pleased to announce the inauguration of the Robert Poate Scholarship for Leadership in memory of Private Robert Poate (Old Boy 2007) who was killed in action while serving in Afghanistan in August 2012.
Robert's parents, Hugh and Janny Poate, decided to establish a scholarship in Robert's memory because Canberra Grammar School meant so much to Robert and his family. He spent his entire 15 years of schooling at Canberra Grammar School from Pre-School to Year 12, this being two thirds of his 23 year life. He was a boarder in Blaxland House, was the recipient of House Colours and the Mark Sowell Award for Outdoor Education and was Captain of the 3rd XV.
The Scholarship is for leadership because of Robert's identified leadership potential both at School and in the Army, and it is intended to support and encourage a young man with leadership potential in Years 11 and 12 at the School.
The Scholarship has already been generously supported by the Poate family and the 6th Battalion, The Royal Australian Regiment. The School community is invited to join in helping to ensure that Robert Poate is remembered through future generations at the School. A donation to the scholarship is fully tax deductible.
Five Ways to Give to Grammar
1. Annual Giving Appeal Our Annual Giving Appeal is an opportunity to donate a fully tax deductible gift of any amount, large or small, by 30 June each year. Please donate to our 2013 Annual Giving appeal to support the Robert Poate Memorial Scholarship for Leadership.
2. CGS Scholarship Fund
Student diversity continues to be strong at Canberra Grammar School and we welcome students from all backgrounds and faiths. We inspire our students to believe in their potential and to discover their individual interests. Thanks to donors we offer a variety of scholarships to students entering Year 7 and 11 and aim to expand this to provide greater access to the Canberra Grammar education. A donation to the Scholarship Fund is tax deductible and naming rights may be considered.
3. CGS Building Fund
Your gift will directly help build a teaching and learning environment for collaboration between teachers and students in the twenty-first century. All donations to the Building Trust are fully tax deductible.
4. AISUSA Foundation
The Australian Independent Schools USA Foundation (AISUSA Foundation) was established in 2006 to encourage US based alumni who have a US tax liability to give to member schools and receive a US tax benefit. The Foundation complies with US charity law. Visit www.aisusafoundation.com or email secretary@aisusafoundation.com for details of giving to Canberra Grammar School this way.
5. A Bequest
Contained within a will, a bequest specifically reserves part of an estate for a particular beneficiary, directed in ways which reflect the donor’s wishes. Bequests can take the form of defined personal assets such as bonds, property, an insurance policy or a work of art, or can instead be in the form of a fixed sum or a percentage of an estate. Benefactors can direct bequests to the School to use at its discretion on the understanding that such unencumbered gifts allow the School the flexibility to direct donations to areas of particular need. Alternatively, bequests can be directed to a specific area of the School, such as a particular academic discipline, a co‑curricular activity, an endowment fund or to fund a scholarship. We recommend that you consult a solicitor before finalising arrangements to ensure that they reflect your personal wishes and circumstances. If you have already made a will, you may simply prefer to add a codicil to include Canberra Grammar School – a straightforward and inexpensive procedure. A bequest to Canberra Grammar School is a gift that will give for generations to come. Your legacy — no matter how great or small — can change lives.
CGS Edwards Society
The School established the Edwards Society in honour of its first Headmaster, Dr W J Edwards, who had the faith and vision to proceed with the establishment of an Anglican Boys’ School in the national capital. The Edwards Society recognises the donors in our community who continue to provide for the future of the School by remembering the School in their will. Membership of the Society is open to those choosing to include Canberra Grammar School in their estate plans. Informing the School about your intentions means you can be part of the future in your life time. All correspondence regarding a bequest is confidential.
Thank you for considering giving to Grammar. We are excited about what we can offer our students now and in the future.
