Although we lost the game 25 - 5, it was a fantastic start to our
season. The game started very well for us with Angus Lattimore leading
from the front in the unfamiliar role of scrum half. He was everywhere
the ball was and his persistency paid off with the games first try. Our
defence was sensational led by the Andrews twins, Nathan and Bradley
and Raghav Sharma-Burton. They tackled everything that moved with no
fear and exemplified courage. Our two props, Edward Sisson and Oliver
Tye, were playing their first ever game of rugby and both came off
saying they had fun which is an encouraging sign. Edward's first ever
touch involved a 30metre run through numerous tackles! Queanbeyan scored their first try right on half time and we went to the break with the scores locked at 5-5. The boys showed the obvious signs of such a short preparation and were very tired from their enormous workload. We all new it was going to be a tough second half. Queanbeyan went on to score 4 second half tries but not before all 13 boys played themselves to a stand still. I am sure there were some tired boys come Saturday evening. Another standout performer was Theshi Santhirasegaran. With a year of rugby experience behind him he showed a cool head in many difficult situations at fullback. He looks very settled and there is no doubt he will have a big year. Our wingers, Jared Baum and Abdullah Hassan held their positions well and settled more into the game the further it went. Daniel Smart started at centre for the first time and made many decisive tackles. Our scrum went really well considering we only had time to practise it once the day before. Harrison Knight at hooker won a couple against the feed and organised the forwards extremely well. Special mention must be made to Hamish Roberts and Ethan Norman who both came to our rescue late in the week and signed up to play with our side. We really appreciate their commitment. Ethan was playing his first game back after a year off but quickly picked up all the necessary skills. Hamish was his usual elusive self and went very close to scoring a number of times. We all know he will have another big year. We look forward to next week with another training run under our belts. |
