Academic Disciplines

The Canberra Grammar School curriculum is anchored in the traditional disciplines of languages and literature, mathematics and the natural sciences, history and geography, economics, and the arts. They mirror groupings of ideas and skills that are widely accepted in our culture and civilisation, that have grown out of deep human emotions as well as out of useful "ways of knowing".

Each discipline has a cultural element difficult to define, but involves a sense of belonging to a group of like-minded people which brings a strongly social aspect to a discipline. This also raises the question of what makes people like-minded. Why do some people love drama? There is something about the discipline that brings out a passion, an emotional response, that drives people to commit and strive in ways which might not seem rational to another observer but which are utterly compelling to the smitten. The knowledge that a person shares this response with others draws them together in a special bond and provides part of the reward for being involved.

At Canberra Grammar School boys are encouraged to discover their own passions, to develop these special bonds and to be rewarded for their intellectual involvement.
